They are attracted to the annual competitions of the “Top Ten Singers”, the “Ten Best Presenters”, the “Pioneer Forum” Debate and the English Speech Contest. Other activities, such as “Lectures by Celebrities and Famous Teachers”, “Culture
Wednesday”, and “Academician Forum” also inspire students’ involvement in arts and literature.
The university also joins in the program of “bringing national arts onto college campus” organized by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, so that students can enjoy the performance of different forms by artists in varied fields of art.
Clubs and Associations
There are around 68 students’ clubs and associations with 6200 members on campus, featuring academics, innovation, social practice, entertainment, public interests and so on.
The most influential associations are: “the Young Volunteers’Association”, “the Drama League”, “the School Choir”, “the Dance Club”, “the Band Music Club”, “the English League”, “the Calligraphy and Painting Society” and others. In April of every year, the Festival of Students’ Association” is held with different themes, during which all the associations display their works and achievements, and the best ones are awarded.
Meanwhile, to meet the needs of community work, some students’ associations constantly select students from different majors to go to the neighboring community voluntarily to promote the awareness of English learning, environmental protection, the handicapped and schooling supports, and law enforcement, etc. In the past three years, the student volunteers have organized over 100 non-profit public-interest activities.
Social and Volunteer Work
Students’ social and volunteer work is oriented toward two areas. Some students go to the rural areas, factories, mines, enterprises, to publicize government policies, assist farmers with scientific methods, provide voluntary teaching to the poor, conduct research in enterprises, and do field work for the development of China’s New Rural Areas. Through these social practices, students are able to experience the life of the disadvantaged and the difficulties in rural areas. This will help them tailor their career paths toward working for the disadvantaged group and in the benefit of rural development in China.
Student volunteers also go to communities, enterprises and public institutions to do on-the-job training or other voluntary work. In recent years, the university has established many off-campus practice sites for students to do community work in Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Ditan Park, Panjiayuan Antique Town, the Asian Games Village Subdistrict, Qinghe Subdistrict, Xisanqi Subdistrict, and Anxiangli Community and many other areas in Beijing City.
In the past few years, over 30,000 person-times of social practices and voluntary service have been carried out, and more than 300 students have been awarded “outstanding individuals of social practice” by the university. Some students’ excellent social work was reported by news media such as Beijing Evening News, Beijing Daily, China Times, BTV, the Sina Net, the Sohu Net and the People's Network, etc.
